NCSHC January and February Member Meeting Recaps - SD Soil Health Coalition and Gabe Brown

The North Carolina Soil Health Coalition began holding monthly membership meetings in January 2023. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month and are open to all members of the Coalition. Since members are located across North Carolina, the meetings are held virtually over Zoom. Members are encouraged to meet in-person and attend the meetings from a common location with other members that are located nearby. A primary goal of the Coalition is to build relationships among farmers across the State, and these monthly meetings are one step towards meeting that goal.

The meetings cover a different topic each month, such as Soil Testing in March. The meeting program, which provides an educational component and a time for farmers to share their experiences and ask questions, is followed by a brief business meeting and updates from the Board of Directors.

In January, the Coalition was joined by Cindy Zenk, the Coordinator for the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition, and Doug Sieck, the original Chair for the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition. Cindy and Doug shared their experiences and knowledge gained from leading the South Dakota Coalition which was started in 2015. The Coalition Bylaws were adopted by the Board of Directors at the January meeting.

At the February meeting, Gabe Brown from Understanding Ag and Soil Health Academy joined the Coalition to discuss the importance of building relationships among farmers. He shared important principles that he has learned through years of teaching farmers how to implement soil health practices.
